Four Ways To Show Gratitude For Volunteers

It’s easy to forget that many individuals who dedicate their time to your Association are volunteers. It’s easy because they often work so hard, it’s as if this is their job! But, no! Many times, they do have a full-time job in addition to their volunteer work. Not to mention family, friends, to do lists and every other obligation that we all manage. What is the best way to show appreciation to the individuals who keep your Association chugging along so smoothly?

1-Recognition. Not everyone is huge on this so make note to read your audience. This could be a mention at your upcoming annual meeting or event. It could also be in the form of a certificate or a sign to be displayed somewhere for all to see. Don’t have an office? Recognize the individual in your newsletter or on social media.

2-Gifts! It doesn’t need to be something big or expensive. It’s amazing how you can make someone’s day by simply buying them a coffee or leaving their favorite candy on their desk with a note.

3-Ask for their opinion. This one seems a little odd but many people who are volunteering are invested in your organization on a lot of different levels. It’s very likely that they want to feel valued and utilized. Asking their opinion or thoughts on current issues shows that you value their input, you trust them and recognize they are truly part of your Organization.

4-Happy Hour! Plan a happy hour or small event to thank your volunteers. It doesn’t have to be a big-time commitment and it should be something everyone would enjoy doing. Bonus—this also encourages relationship building as your crew spends time together talking about non-work items!
